As the weather cools down, it’s only natural for our bodies to crave the comfort foods that are often not so kind to our figures. Fortunately, there are lots of alternatives that will deliver the same satisfaction without wasting your efforts in RPM.  When spring comes around, you’ll be glad you chose some of these winter warmers over a calorie packed butter chicken.

Try a few of these easy swaps..

Swap the Potato and Bacon Soup for Chunky tomato, celery and bean soup.  Potato and pumpkin based soups can often be loaded with full fat cream and high in starch and salt. Instead, try a homemade soup packed with your favourite vegies, lean meat and a use a tomato or stock base.

Swap the pepperoni pizza for Tandoori chicken pita pizzas. Cheesy pizzas with processed meats deliver the majority of your daily calories in one hit. You don’t have to miss out on pizza completely, instead, use wholegrain pita bread as your base and top with tomato, red onion, Tandoori chicken breast, fresh baby spinach and low fat Greek yoghurt for a nutritious alternative.

Swap the potato or pasta bake for a roasted vegetable bake. Potato or pasta bakes are high in saturated fats, an easy way to sabotage your weight loss goals, instead, try roasting your favourite vegies (eggplant, zucchini, tomato and carrot work well), top with a tomato based pasta sauce, herbs and a sprinkle of parmesan and breadcrumbs for a lower calorie alternative

Swap the sheppard’s pie for a lean beef and vegetable casserole prepared in the slow cooker.

The Sheppard pie’s pastry, cheesy potato and fatty cuts of meat make this family favourite the perfect combination for weight gain. For a ‘hearty’ dish after a long day at the office, prepare a casserole in the morning and let the slow cooker do all the work! Add lean cuts of beef, vegetables and chickpeas or lentils for a nutritious warming meal.
